We celebrate the 300th birthday of the 1718 Silk Coverlet. This coverlet consists of a backing and pieced top only and is one of the earliest-known dated patchworks. It is constructed in the mosaic patchwork tradition of piecing over papers (English Paper Piecing). The initials E.H and the date 1718 can be found in a central block, however the maker is not known.
Stand by for more Creative Inspiration from Paula Storm, and don’t forget to write to her to let her know what you would like to see in future issues.
Plus you can see some of the winners from the QuiltCon show held in Pasadena, California, earlier this year. Of the more than 40 winning quilts, two were made by Australian quilters — congratulations to Kathy Thorncraft and Tara Glastonbury of NSW.
In this issue we are really working the fabrics! There are a number of projects that showcase some of the newer ranges of Australian-designed fabrics, including the newly released range by Michelle Marvig — Cidade, produced by Leutenneger.
Leanne Harvey’s fabulous king-size quilt topper uses Emma Jansen’s Classic range of fabrics. If you look closely you will see these prints are remakes of past designs but they are neutral grey and black, making them very versatile, and Lisa Ratford has designed a striking market tote bag using the Outback Wife range of fabrics.
We also have some lovely traditional-style quilts; Lorraine Moran shares a scrappy, rarely seen version of reversing the direction of each row so you achieve a swirling effect.
Deborah Dorward will be sharing a Baltimore Beauties quilt that has outstanding original appliqué designs in the 16 blocks and around the border. This quilt will be shared in a five-part series offering the full-size patterns as we go along. Maybe you can challenge yourself to complete the sections featured in each issue and find yourself with a lovely quilt top ready to quilt by early next year.
